Richard Lawton
Richard Lawton was born in Coventry in 1933, trained as an engineer and used his expertise while doing National Service in the RAF.
Retiring in 1990, Richard took up watercolour painting and attended evening classes with Michael Warr. From then on Richard’s has been a self-taught artist, and while always interested in pastels he has settled on using wet and dry emery paper – from B&Q!
Richard, inspired by a speaker who demonstrated clay modelling at an Art Society lecture, joined a pottery group in Chipping Camden, under the tutelage of Hilary LaForce. From that point Richard has modelled figures and wild life, as opposed to ”pots”, using paper clay, which is very forgiving, and he decorates his figures with bright under-glaze colours.
He is a very keen photographer of the countryside, is well-travelled, and is always on the lookout for interesting faces.
